VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL 2006

VBS had a theme of “FIESTA: Where Kids are Fired Up About Jesus” and was held mornings July 10-14, 2006 , at St. Mark’s Church-Silvis.  It has come and gone, but certainly not without much excitement, fun, fellowship, worship and learning.  Between 15-20 children attended each day to join the fun!

Alex Blackwell, aged 2-1/2, from Christ Episcopal Church, came for his first time and hated to see each day end, as his Pre-Schoolers Class had crafts, music, snacks, and fellowship with the older children.

Each day the program opened with lively and exciting (new) music, with FIESTA as a base, including one Song (‘I Have a Friend Who Loves Me’) being partially in Spanish, which the children picked up very quickly.  Music is an integral part of any worship time, and this set the stage for the morning’s activities.  It’s amazing how quickly the children memorize the music and join in.

Scripture was read during music time, each day moving the program into a Bible Adventure, and FIESTA Finale, which explains through acting out what the Scripture of the day really means.  The first thing the students learn at the opening is the expression of joy they shout out as a group each time the Bible Point is read.  For this year’s Spanish theme, we shouted “VIVA” each time, which, of course, means ‘Life’.  The Bible Points were:  (1) ‘Jesus is a Friend!’ – VIVA!  (2) ‘Jesus is Our Life’! – VIVA!  (3) ‘Jesus is Our Leader!’ – VIVA!  (4) ‘Jesus is Our Savior!’ – VIVA!  (5) ‘Jesus is Our Helper!’ – VIVA.

Chadder, the Chipmunk, is one of the highlights each year, as he struggles to love everyone, teach everyone else to love each other, and try to stay out of trouble, making it to the end (Friday) to collect the week’s prize – a million M&M’s.

Our ‘Kid-to-Kid’ Operation theme this year was to prepare wonderful, warm blankets to send to another country where children are cold and have no way to stay warm.  The FIESTA blankets were bright orange and stated in English and Spanish ‘Jesus Loves Me’ – VIVA!

Hayley Moran, from Christ Church, comes each year, and this year enjoyed having her cousin, Alex, there.  Part of our blessing in the family of God is seeing those we love enveloped in His love and His care, so that was very special.

Thanks to Fr. Bill Knapp and Fr. Jim Marshall of St. Mark’s for being there each day with the students and the leaders, joining us in worship and fellowship, participating wherever they were needed during the skits and plays, and to the countless volunteers and leadership at St. Mark’s for welcoming Christ Church to join them another year.
